Marie sat, sobbing in front of the storm grate. Seven years old and kicked out of her family home. It hadn't been a large home. It wasn't even very nice. The roof leaked, especially on stormy days like this. Her hood pulled over her hair and most of her face, Marie curled in on herself. She pressed her forehead to her knees. The light pink nightgown was now soaked and the end was covered with mud. The hoodie she had found, an XL men's hoodie, more than covered her. It was damp now too though. If only she could find some place dry.
Marie heard a noise as a rat skittered by her feet. She reached out. There was a crunch and then a wet noise as a claw pierced the rat's body. It didn't have time to squeak. Marie opened her mouth, the joints of her jaw unhinging like a snake. She swallowed the rat whole, gulping down even the scaly tail.
Mistressss Medusssa The snakes whispered to her. Ssssomeone issss coming. A beasssst like ussss. He can help ussss. He can carry usssss. He is ssssso ssssstrong. The snakes hissed to her, almost as if they had realized to not freeze they would need to help their host. Just as they had predicted, a man walked around the corner. He didn't seem to be anything special. Until he pushed the full and very heavy dumpster out from between him and Marie, that is. The snakes were right, this man was strong. Strong enough to take care of Marie even. The memory of her mother's terrified screams echoed through the child's brain as she flexed the demonic wings that were presently covered by the hoodie.
"Are you hurt?" The man asked, reaching down a hand for Marie.
"I don't think so. I think I'm going to be jusssst fine."
She took his hand and gazed into his eyes. She could feel her eyes glow red. It was almost impossible to describe. Something like blushing but in your eyes. Then the man's eyes went cloudy and he gazed at her with all the adoration of a puppy dog. Or what she assumed a puppy dog's adoration looked like. She had never known.
"What is your name, little master?" The man asked as he picked her up. She knew instinctively his name was Bobby. What a boring name. Not more boring than Marie though.
"Call me Medusa." The little girl hissed gently in response.
"As you wish, Medusa.
And thus started the creation of her army.
